Shaare Torah v. Young Israel of Woodmere seniors quarterfinal

Though the YIBB league officially has 10 games in the regular season, an exception for a wild-card game had to be made for two teams vying for the fourth and final playoff spot. A match-up featuring the YIW Wolfpack and Shaare Torah Stars was everything you could ask for in a basketball game . . . and then some. Both squads were coming off impressive seasons against some of the league’s best talent and with both teams sharing the same record, a unique win-and-you’re-in scenario presented itself.

The game got off to a quick start with the Stars jumping to an early 10—4 lead, thanks to efficient outside shooting from “Demetrius” Sasson and Pesso. But the Wolfpack came roaring back with a 12—4 run to close out the second quarter with a buzzer-beating trey from Eli “Ballin’” Gurwitz that brought the sold-out crowd to its feet. With the wolves up 2 at the half, Shaare Torah legend-turned-coach San Marciano, a.k.a. Baruch “Buster” Hyman, kept his team composed and chalked up some creative plays designed against the box-and-one defensive set. At the onset of the third quarter, YIW maintained their high-octane offensive rush with sensational play-making from their guards’ trio of Gaby “Flip” Motechin, Jason “Lets Gooo” Lazaros, and Jason “Cash-Money” Geller. But midway through the third quarter, the Stars came alive and responded with some big stops on defense and began slowly inching closer. Despite exceptional rebounding from YIW’s Jonathan “The Belieber” Berger, David “Diesel” Rubin, and Evan “Hack-a-Harris” Harris, the Stars were still able to contest every shot and keep YIW off the scoreboard.

By the start of the 4th quarter, the game was all knotted up at 44. With a record 9 lead changes in the last 8 minutes of play, this game was down to the wire. With :51 ticks left on the clock, Shaare Torah pulled ahead with a five-point lead after a big-time triple from small forward “Snuggles” Levy. Just 110 seconds later, at the opposite end of the court, Hillel “Prom King” Schreier knocked down a turn-around jumper to bring the pack to within 3. After a costly turnover on the next possession in the Stars’ end, YIW found themselves on a clear-path breakaway with Eli Gurwitz leading the charge. Coasting to the hoop at full-speed, he made his way to the hoop but was shoved from behind and went flying into the boards. A flagrant foul was distributed and after hitting both foul shots, the Stars were up just one by a score of 53—52 with 20 seconds left in regulation. YIW had a chance to take the lead, but the Stars’ tenacious defense kept the Wolfpack from taking any high-percentage shots with time expiring and they came out victorious by the score of 55—52. What an exciting finish! High-scorers in the game were Eli Gurwitz with 22 and Al Pesso with 24. A big shout-out goes to all the league referees, coaches, and commissioners for all their efforts in bringing another successful season of YIBB. Keep on keepin’ on.

In a senior semifinal game, MAY defeated Mashadi by a score of 71—61. Mashadi started the game strong, taking a 12—4 early lead. But MAY stormed back. Ari Shultson looked like Steph Curry from beyond the arc, and was everywhere on defense. Dovi Rogoff came in and was unstoppable in the paint. MAY now advances to the championship game and will face the winner of the semifinal matchup between Shaare Torah and Or Chaim.

Stay tuned for complete playoff coverage of the National Council of Young Israel Basketball League right through the championships.
