The Israeli military on Monday released details of the technology being used to detect and destroy tunnels dug by Hezbollah under the Jewish state’s northern border with Lebanon.

Since “Operation Northern Shield” was launched last week, three tunnels have been uncovered in the border area. Israel has said the operation would continue until the tunnel threat was fully neutralized.

According to the Hebrew news site Mako, the operation is being led by a special technological intelligence team under the supervision of the IDF Northern Command. The team was established in 2014 and only recently completed its work of developing a high-quality picture of the tunnel threat. Once this was accomplished, a special lab was set up to detect specific tunnels.

The lab and its support team work on scanning the area and deciphering the information gleaned as a result. It is also working to create new technologies and techniques to further enhance its detection and mapping abilities. They work in coordination with IDF engineering and combat units on the ground throughout the process of finding and destroying the tunnels.

Captain G., who commands the lab’s operations, stated, “We have brought the information we collected in the north, and the technological effort is combined together with the operational and intelligence efforts in the division. We learned that when we bring the engineers, investigators, and technology people to the field … the results aren’t long in coming.”

Brig. Gen. Yaniv Avitan of the Technology and Logistics Division also commented on the operation, saying, “The development of the lab’s capabilities in the north and its methods of operation were carried out in light of our experience with the workings of the lab in the Gaza Division. We are determined to persevere in our efforts to actualize our technological and investigative capabilities in service and in proximity with the operational forces on the ground.”

“We have the best technological minds and means required to accomplish this mission,” he added.
