Named “Best Pest Control Company” by New York Magazine, Arrow Exterminating Company, Inc. has been serving New York City, the five boroughs, and Long Island with distinction since its inception. Founded in 1947 by Bernard and Irene Stegman, the company is now under the management of their daughters Jackie Grabin and Debby Tappan and has evolved into one of the largest, most trusted pest control companies in the New York metropolitan area, boasting a multi-generational client base.

Recently, the 5TJT interviewed Arrow Exterminating’s expert entomologist Michael Deutsch, who discussed pest control and the safe and effective elimination of yellow jackets, squirrels, and raccoons.

Rochelle Maruch Miller: How can Arrow Exterminating rid my home and property of yellow jackets, squirrels, and raccoons safely and with alacrity?

Michael Deutsch: Yellow jackets are wasps. They can be aggressive, depending on the time of the season. Over-wintering queens emerge in the spring to begin a new colony. As the summer progresses, the colony grows. Arrow will inspect and evaluate the problem. Typically, these wasps make their nests underground. When the nest is located, it is treated with a dust injected into the nest. Should the colony be established inside the home in a wall or ceiling void, a dust is applied to neutralize the wasps. The wall void may need to be exposed to remove the remains of the nest.

Regarding squirrels and raccoons, we have over 30 NYSDEC licensed nuisance wildlife trappers who will inspect and evaluate the situation. We will install humane, live traps on the property and visit daily, Monday through Friday. Trapped animals are humanely removed from the property. In some cases, the trapper will install traps in the attic space and follow the same protocols.

RMM: What are the signs of a squirrel or raccoon infestation?

MD: Typically, the homeowner will hear scratching, bumping, and clawing sounds, usually in the attic space. An exterior inspection may reveal a structural gap where the animal has gained access to the attic or soffit of the home. These animals will also damage trash cans to get to food.

RMM: How can they damage my home?

MD: These animals can rip off siding to gain access to the house. They can damage utility wiring. Their urine and fecal material may stain ceilings and may also present a health issue.

RMM: What should I do if I discover these animals on my property?

MD: Leave them alone and make sure your trash and garbage is secured.

RMM: How can I prevent them from returning?

MD: Unless they have “moved” into your home, just keep food inaccessible to these mammals.

RMM: During which season are they likely to invade my home?

MD: Squirrels will move in at any time of the year. Raccoons will, too, if they are looking for winter shelter or if the female will be having babies (kits).

RMM: When do raccoons and squirrels have offspring?

MD: Raccoons have offspring in April/May. Squirrels have offspring in February through April and again in September–October.

RMM: How can I prevent squirrels from nesting in my attic?

MD: Be sure the home is in good repair and there are no gaps in the siding or roofline, especially where the chimney meets the roof. Make sure you have a chimney cap and all vents are properly screened.

RMM: What message would you like to convey to our readers?

MD: Arrow Exterminating Company, Inc. has been providing pest management services to residential, commercial, and institutional clients from Manhattan to Montauk for over 72 years. As a family-owned-and-operated company, Arrow has always put the client first. When pests become an issue, the Arrow staff is there to provide professional and caring services for our clients.
