Following a successful year-long initiative to restore a historic 135-year-old Torah scroll on permanent loan from the Memorial Scrolls Trust in London, Calvary Hospital will dedicate the restored Torah at their Bronx campus (1740 Eastchester Road) on Wednesday, November 9. Cocktails begin at 6:00 p.m. Program will start 6:30 p.m. Dietary laws will be observed.
This Torah scroll–No. 515, dating from 1880–is originally from the town of Taus-Domazlice, in what is now known as the Czech Republic. Hosting the dedication on the anniversary of Kristallnacht, a date that is often recognized as the beginning of the Holocaust, is especially fitting as this scroll is a survivor of this tragedy. After the dedication, this scroll will once again be kosher for use in services and Jewish rituals.
Special guests who will be in attendance will include Jeffrey Ohrenstein, executive director, Memorial Scrolls Trust (www.memorialscrollstrust.org), and Rabbi Moshe Druin, Sofer on Site, the company that handled the restoration. Reservations are strongly recommended by Friday, November 4. To RSVP, please e-mail Vanessa Rovira at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the Calvary special events hotline at 718-576-2809.
Since it was founded in 1899, Calvary has always welcomed patients from diverse faiths and religions. The hospital is grateful to the Charles R. and Winifred R. Weber Foundation for their early, generous support of the Torah restoration project. To support this important initiative, please visit www.calvaryhospital.org/torahrestoration.
