Presidential debate moderator Candy Crowley has admitted that Mitt Romney was right to criticise Barack Obama for his response to the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi which killed ambassador Chris Stevens and three others.

The Republican candidate argued that the President had blamed the assault on an anti-Muslim video – but the CNN political correspondent sided with Obama as she claimed that he called the raid an ‘act of terror’ the day after it occurred.

However, Crowley appeared to backtrack just a few hours later, admitting that Romney had been ‘right in the main’ but adding that he had ‘picked the wrong word’.

Top Romney allies said Crowley ‘had no business’ intervening in the argument, accusing her of ‘getting in the game’ rather than being an impartial observer.
