On Sunday, September 8, 1,000 cars descended on a local body shop, Precision Auto Body, not to be repaired but to donate thousands of dollars’ worth of gently used clothes for aniyei Eretz Yisrael. Keren Minchas Shlomo has been conducting these drives for many years throughout the metropolitan area including as well as in Monsey and Lakewood.
Five years ago, they decided to move their clothing drop-off point from Agudas Yisroel in Far Rockaway to accommodate the increasing generosity of our local community. This new location is almost devoid of traffic on Sundays and better accommodates the sorting and packing of clothes.
Last April, our community donated 13 tons of clothes, filling up a 40-foot shipping container. Our community’s drive in a single event surpasses the clothes collected in six other neighborhoods both in quantity and quality.
The clothes are packed in shipping containers and dropped off at a central location outside Yerushalayim. Gemachs are contacted on the date the clothing is to be allocated where they finally wind up in the closets of aniyim throughout Eretz Yisrael. KMS distributes to gemachs in chareidi and chiloni neighborhoods and they also helped to supply needed clothes to families impacted by the Haifa fires. This year, KMS added a gemach in Efrat to supply clothing to aniyim in the Gush.
This event could not be successful without the volunteers from our local yeshivot. Girls from SKA, TAG, Shulamith, and Shalhevet have worked side by side, which demonstrates the achdus in our community. Over 80 girls came on Sunday to participate in this huge act of chesed to our brethren in Eretz Yisrael.
As the donation bags are opened and sorted, the volunteers are amazed at the quality and condition of the beautiful clothes that are donated. Anything that is not in perfect condition doesn’t find its way to Eretz Yisrael. The gemachs are delighted when they pick up cartons from the Five Towns. Many of us view this act of chesed as a means to clean out our closets, but the recipients are overjoyed by the kindness and generosity of yidden in the Five Towns.
Broken cars come to Precision Auto Body, 10 Nassau Avenue in Inwood, all the time. Once a year, Precision also helps repair the hearts broken down from poverty.
