Ten Israeli school children received medial attention for itchy skin and burning eyes after coming in contact with a poisonous species of caterpillar, Israel’s Channel 2 reported on Thursday.
Eight of the kids developed an allergic reaction that required immediate treatment, Channel 2 said. A Magen David Adom medical rescue team helped the children, aged 6-10.
Responding to the incident, the municipality of Rishon LeZion sent a crack team to investigate the caterpillar attack. The crew, from City Hall, discovered two pine trees located in the school yard that held a number of nests. They noted that the same trees had been treated a few weeks ago against infestation, Channel 2 said.
The city later announced that tree branches playing host to the corrosive caterpillars will be removed.
Rishon LeZion was the second city in two days to fall victim to toxic creepy crawlers. On Wednesday, 28 first graders from the village of Oranit came into contact with caterpillars of a similar species. The school children experienced burning eyes and itchy skin. They were evacuated to several nearby hospitals for treatment, observation and eventual release, Channel 2 said.
