Purim At DRS

When walking into DRS Yeshiva on Purim night, one can’t help but feel “Marbim B’Simcha.” The Annual DRS Purim Chagigah is a highlight of the year, and is unique to DRS, as it is one of the few schools that hosts its students and their parents at a fun, exciting, and inspiring Simchat Purim event. The night began as students, parents, and community members filled DRS’s beautiful beit midrash for Megillah reading led by Rabbi Kaminetsky. Following Megillah, a siyum was made by 14 students who completed Masechet Megillah in the 60 days leading up to Purim! On Purim, we celebrate the fact the Jews at that time willingly reaccepted the Torah, and it was so inspiring to see high school students accept this great project upon themselves in honor of the holiday.

The night continued as DRS students and rebbeim, decked out in Purim costume, danced for hours to the lively music of Neshoma Orchestra. Following dancing, everyone enjoyed the annual student-created comedy videos, and a comedy performance of “DRS News” by some of the DRS rebbeim. The night faded away as the student body burst into laughter. n

DRS Star Wins At Adelphi Press Day

The DRS Star, DRS Yeshiva High School’s student newspaper, attended Adelphi University’s annual Press Day, winning awards while getting new ideas to further improve the newspaper. Twenty-six public and private schools from across Long Island attended the conference, held at the university’s Garden City campus. First, a panel of seasoned journalists and professors discussed several issues regarding the media. Next, students and advisers broke up into smaller groups to exchange ideas about their school newspapers. After lunch came the Quill Awards presentation, as top high school journalists were honored for their work. Columnist Jeremy Koffsky won First Place in “Best Online Writing.”

Co-editors-in-chief Sruli Fruchter and Josh Samet won First Place awards for “Best Front Page Layout.” “I’m really proud of the awards our newspaper won at the Quill Awards, which are a reflection of the great work done by our entire staff,” said Fruchter. “I also want to thank our devoted faculty adviser, Ms. Julie Foster, as well as our Menahel Rabbi Kaminetsky and Principal Dr. Broder, for all of their hard work, and the advice they provided, which was instrumental in making The Star an award-winning newspaper.”
