Change
“Class of 2011â€â€”I remember when I first saw that written on the back of the new sweatshirt I received in the beginning of ninth grade. 2011. I remember thinking, “That’s so far off in the future, I don’t even have to start considering something so far off!†Well guess what? It’s here. It’s finally here. As I write this on Motzaei Shabbos, my graduation from HAFTR High School is this coming Thursday. As everyone is so excited to be done with high school and to go off to college, I keep thinking that this is all one big dream and I will soon wake up and be a kid again. Of course I’m excited to go to college and to embrace campus life and everything it has to offer. But then again, who likes change? I’m not a huge fan.
Think about it: If a situation is comfortable, why change it? So many people feel lost in new situations. As many of my Mom’s readers know, I was recently hit by a car as I was riding my bike. I am not comparing leaving high school with getting hit by a pickup truck. I’m just speaking figuratively. You’re not going to like every single situation that you’re in, but you just have to learn to embrace it and to see past the difficulties. I don’t want to leave high school. But it’s going to happen and I am going to college. I know I’ll be sad at first but I’m excited about going to Stern College. I know I’ll mature and learn new things and transition to new experiences. I am going to attempt to not “freak out†over the fact that things are changing. People are not disappearing and I will keep in touch with them. I can always visit the places I am leaving. I can keep singing. I can keep writing. I can do all the things I love. The world is not ending. I am just moving on to a new chapter of my life.
So what I want to say is this: Seniors 2011, it’s been real. Most of us have been together since we were five. The good part about that is that we know our friendships will last. We are not leaving each other; we are merely saying “See you later.†Change happens. It’s what we do with it that matters. Congrats!
