“Rebecca (a.k.a. Rivka) Lubin? It’s your turn.â€
“Can I come with her?â€
“Sorry, just in the changing room. Then she is on her own for the M.R.I.â€
“How long will the M.R.I. take?â€
“Anytime between 45 minutes to an hour.â€
Sometimes I don’t mind waiting as long as I have a pen and a piece of paper in hand. It gives me an opportunity to organize my day/week in general. I think much of my life is spent waiting. As long as you can release yourself of the anxiety that goes into waiting—the constant worrying about losing precious time that you can be doing something else—you can actually have a productive experience. It gives you time to reflect on what’s going on in your life and time to plan your future. And so I sit here in the comfort of the Winthrop Radiology waiting room reflecting and musing.
This past Sunday, the Lubin/Davidson clan gathered to honor the fathers in our family. It was also an opportunity to pay homage to all our June birthdays: my son Naftali; my Mom, Grandma Esther; my father-in-law, Zayde Ike; our family friend Sheila; and a super exciting milestone for my husband Lenny (a.k.a. Leib/Daddy). Birthdays are a chance for both the people born on that date to thank Hashem for the lives they were given and for their loved ones to acknowledge how much they are blessed with having the birthday celebrators in their lives. I certainly don’t think anyone enjoys birthday celebrations as much as Yussie. In fact, anytime cake is served, Yussie has decided that it must be someone’s birthday! He always takes advantage of an opportunity to sing “Happy Birthday to You†and when Yussie gives you his big smile and huge hug along with melodious voice, you feel like you are the only one who has ever celebrated a birthday before!
We are celebrating another type of milestone this Thursday evening. Rivka will be officially graduating from high school. It’s a reminder that my babies are growing up! By Friday I will be the parent of three high school graduates, one of which is already a college graduate, Rochel will be in eleventh grade (almost a senior), Yussie will be in “middle school,†and Lea will be a mature fourth grader! Time is fleeting and there is no way to stop it.
“Will you be able to fax me the results of the M.R.I. as well as to my daughter’s doctor?â€
“Sure. What’s the fax number?â€
I don’t know what I’ll actually do with these results, but if they are willing to send me them directly, it can’t hurt. This Friday it will be three weeks since my daughter was struck by a car while riding her bicycle. We are so thankful that she is improving, but alas the foot is not healed and still “looks wrong,†hence the M.R.I. This test should tell us exactly what is going on inside her foot. My Dad can’t have an M.R.I.—he has a pacemaker. Anyone with anything metal inside cannot undergo such a test. And so, there was a whole list of questions for Rivka to answer prior to the test to make sure that this would not be an issue. Who thought about the bobby pins in her hair or the snaps on her shirt? Everything needed to be taken into account and every piece of metal needed to be removed.
Do we have milk in the house? These are the things that go through my mind when I am sitting and waiting . . . I am actually defrosting chicken for supper, so that is being taken care of. I make lists . . . that’s what I do while I am waiting. I often misplace these lists, but just writing them keeps me reminded when I next enter the supermarket. It’s sort of like when I would take notes on the textbook before the test—even if I never actually reviewed those notes, just the writing of them helped me retain most of the knowledge.
Our air conditioning broke this past weekend—the big air conditioner in the living room that cools off most of the downstairs went on Friday night, and our room air conditioner began leaking into our bedroom sometime after Shabbos. Of course then on my to do list is following up with AHC Appliance to ensure that by this weekend we will be cool again!
Just when I think I have been waiting long enough, I approach the front desk.
“Can you please check on how much longer my daughter will be in the M.R.I.?â€
“Just in time Mrs. Lubin, she is just walking out now!â€
Perfect timing!
