5TJTI’m back at Avnet Country Day. It has been an entire year since I’ve been here, but it’s like I never left! The Avnet pools are my second home. They are familiar—I know all the cracks and crevices, and I know when they will be welcoming and when they might seem a bit frightening.

For those of my readers who don’t recall, I spend my summer mornings teaching swimming at Avnet Country Day. After an invigorating morning poolside, I have even more energy to tackle the important work at Rosenfeld & Maidenbaum, LLP. What a great way to spend the summer!

It’s exciting to see the various reactions the campers have when they return to the pool. Some of my expert swimmers suddenly have “amnesia” and the new lifeguards on deck who don’t know the particular children will get the impression that they can’t swim! Thank goodness that I’ve been here sixteen seasons—I know better! Then there are some youngsters who are sure that they do know how to swim only to find the waters too deep or unfamiliar. We have a lot of work to do this summer, and I know that I will enjoy every minute of it!

I have an interesting situation at the pool this summer. Amongst my swim staff are two young women who are daughters of former Avnet lifeguards—my former colleagues! How interesting it is to see these new lifeguards carrying on the torch of the prior generation. Good luck Adina and Talia—I know you will strive to emulate the expertise that your Moms contributed to Avnet.

As for me, I am very glad to have my own daughter Rochel, joining me at the waterfront! She began her tenure at Avnet as a young eight-month-old with a mother’s helper, and has traveled through her years at Avnet and finally ended up alongside me at the pool.

Swimming, as many of my readers know, is my favorite form of exercise. Outdoor swimming is truly my preference. As cozy as a few laps in an indoor pool might be, nothing replaces the appreciation of Hashem’s creations as the sun shines on your back as you glide through the refreshing waters of an outdoor pool. In our neighborhood, that thrill can typically only be satisfied in the summer months (although I do try to recreate it on the annual Polar Bear plunge in Long Beach on Superbowl Sunday).

How fortunate am I to have a place to call “work” while at the same time enjoying the refreshing waters at the same time! It is truly satisfying to see the smiling faces on the campers as they master a new skill in the pool.

Another perk to my summer venue is the fact that the facility is on the Long Beach boardwalk. Although I have yet to actually walk on this particular boardwalk this summer, just knowing that we are in such close proximity and that I can breathe in the invigorating ocean air at the pool gives my heart a reason to be happy!

I hope we at Avnet can impart that love of the water to all of our campers. Here’s to a safe, relaxing, educational, and enjoyable summer!
