The Young Israel of Queens Valley, through the generosity of Rubin and Rita Markowitz, is honoring its esteemed mara d'asra, Rabbi Peretz Steinberg and Rebbetzin Chaya Steinberg, with the writing and dedication of a sefer Torah.
Congregation members, friends, and family plan to gather on Sunday, September 9, to participate in the joyous completion of the Torah at the Markowitz home, followed by the traditional procession to the shul with chuppah, song, and dance.
Rabbi Steinberg attended Yeshiva Mesivta Torah Vodaath and Bais Medrash Elyon. His semichah is from Torah Vodaath and he received the prestigious Yadin Yadin from Rav Moshe Feinstein, zt'l. Rabbi Steinberg's contributions to the community include initiation of the Kew Gardens Hills eiruv, helping to build a community mikveh, establishing the first chevra kadisha in Queens, as well as starting the gemillas chesed fund. He has also served as chairman of the vaad halachah of the National Council of Young Israel and av beis din of the Vaad Harabonim of Queens. In addition, he oversees the proceedings of gitten, religious conversion, and civil cases for the Jewish community. Rabbi Steinberg is also a s'gan av beis din of the Igud Harabonim.
Rabbi and Rebbetzin Steinberg are the parents of Rabbi Binyomin Steinberg, Rebbetzin Ruchie Schechter, Mrs. Yocheved Davis of Chicago, and Rabbi Eliyahu Moshe Steinberg.
