On Friday, October 19, the 10th of Cheshvan, the high-school girls at HANC were treated to an outstanding program titled “Seeing Beyond Yourself.” The inspiring program, prepared by Director of Student Life Nomi Bensoussan, commemorated the yahrzeit of Rachel Imeinu.

The program began with a riveting, down-to-earth recounting of the story of Rachel and Leah, which truly brought the story to life. The girls were then encouraged to follow in the path of Rachel Imeinu and expand themselves to put others before themselves. This was followed by a moving rendition of songs related to Rachel Imeinu sung by the girls’ chorus.

The students were then divided into groups. Various scenarios were presented to the freshman and sophomore girls who discussed each scenario with group facilitators.

The junior and senior girls were first treated to an original presentation created by HANC’s own Maddie Hamada and then answered questions in a poll style. The scenarios focused on extending kindness to others and making the right choices when it comes to including peers and regarding communication with their peers via social media.

Both groups then embarked on a post-it campaign. They wrote short vignettes complimenting their friends and plastered the hall lockers with their notes.

The program culminated in a silent blogging activity which included all 130 students. Various questions were posted on the walls to encourage the girls to think about others and how they might be affected by things that one does. The girls then responded anonymously to each question.

At the end of the program, students received “Be Kind” magnets and guides sponsored by the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation. Student and teacher reaction to the program was amazing. The sensitivities gained will certainly accompany the students throughout the year.
