I Know A GuyBy Larry Gordon

This is not the first time we are featuring I Know A Guy, Inc. in this space. We initially profiled Avi Ackerman ten years ago when he was first setting out in the construction industry. We felt that so much has progressed since then, and his imprint on this community is so widespread, that it only made sense at this time to describe in detail the extent of I Know A Guy Inc.’s rise to the top of the construction market.

Avi Ackerman of I Know A Guy was born and raised right here in Lawrence and now resides with his family in Cedarhurst. His company, which he has built up over the last decade, was situated in the Cedarhurst Center for the first six years until he moved to the newly constructed, state-of-the-art 5 Towns Design Center four years ago, located at 461 Central Avenue in Cedarhurst. In this time, he has built an efficient, trustworthy, and reliable reputation to deliver on time and within his clients’ clearly defined budgetary requirements. After just a few years with his signs on dozens of residential job sites, Avi ventured into and began focusing more intently on the commercial-construction industry.

To date, Avi has constructed over 20 commercial spaces between the Cedarhurst and Hewlett neighborhoods, including Fame, David Desso Jewelers, Xaga Sushi in Hewlett, Savvy Sheek, Sushi Tokyo of Lawrence, Off the Wall Frozen Yogurt, as well as the newly constructed Amsterdam Burger on Chestnut Street in Cedarhurst. He also constructed Mike’s Bistro on Park Ave in New York City.

To anyone who drives through or strolls the neighborhood, it becomes readily apparent that I Know A Guy has literally become part of the woodwork of the Cedarhurst community. To the common observer, it would seem that he has been here far longer than just ten years.

The kind of work he does? I Know A Guy is a versatile business, specializing in commercial and residential construction. Residential work ranges from a simple bathroom renovation to an extension, including kitchens, basements, and full interior renovations. Commercial work ranges from renovation or complete buildouts of restaurants, retail stores, high-rise construction, or strip-mall conversions. His projects range from the local Five Towns area to the greater Long Island area and large-scale commercial projects in the five boroughs.

In September of this year, Avi Ackerman of I Know A Guy was awarded the Best in Contracting Award by the Cedarhurst Awards Program. The press release which was issued in honor of the citation read in part, “Each year, the Cedarhurst Award Program identifies companies that we believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and our community. These exceptional companies help make the Cedarhurst area a great place to live, work, and play.

Up until this point, we have focused on Avi’s work ethic and professionalism in his field. But perhaps if there was one instance where his business acumen and personal empathy and sensitivity converged, that would be in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. No one will ever forget the scene in and around the Five Towns in the aftermath of that storm of historic proportions. Hundreds of families sustained major water and structural damage to their homes and a yeoman’s effort was required to get people back in their homes in a relatively timely fashion.

For Anne Wallisever, Avi and his crew were a godsend. Five rooms in her home sustained serious water damage after Hurricane Sandy and she needed a new boiler and hot-water tank in order to move back into her home. In a discussion with the 5TJT, Anne said that although she had not known Avi before then, she had seen his trucks around town, so she gave him a call and described the extent of the storm damage. He came right over and got rid of the mold, broke the damaged walls, and began and completed the renovation process in a few weeks’ time. Anne mentioned that despite the fact that Avi was in the middle of a number of jobs at the time, he was there daily to ensure everything was moving along as planned. But the thing that earned her trust most of all was the fact that she left for vacation with the crew there and when she returned everything was completed to perfection.
