Over Shabbat a four year old boy named Mike was brought to the IDF's field hospital in the Haitian capital of Port-Au-Prince feeling weak and complaining of nausea and vomiting. The boy, his siblings and parents have been living on the streets of the ruined city since their home was destroyed in the earthquake ten days ago.
He was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia by the Israel Defense Force's Dr. Amit Assa and according to IDF sources "will most likely need chemotherapy and probably a bone marrow transplant."
The IDF's Haitian operation is unequipped to handle long term care, with patients discharged into the streets of Port-Au-Prince after they have been stabilized and have had a chance to rest, as there are many more gravely wounded victims requiring emergency care.
According to the IDF Spokesperson's blog, Israeli medical personnel sent out feelers to find an organization that could arrange transport to the United States for further treatment. The God's Planet organization was chosen among many respondents and came to the field hospital to bring Mike to Miami hospital where he will receive treatments for his cancer.
