Portraying Divorce

Dear Editor,

I recognize that ads placed cover the costs associated with creating a weekly newspaper. Last week’s edition featured a full-page ad from Ohel (page 16) inviting all members of the community to an event featuring a groundbreaking film on the painful realities of divorce. Yet, to my disappointment, another full-page ad [see Page 10 of this week’s issue] featured a cartoon accompanied by text advocating that those in a divorce situation should choose mediation over court. The cartoon implied that it is the female spouse who is irrational.

Not only was the cartoon offensive, but in light of the epidemic proportions of divorce within our community, the ad was insincere and in poor taste. Unless Capital Arbitration and Mediation only wants to attract male clients, I suggest they watch Ohel’s film about the sensitivities surrounding divorce.

Sincerely,

D. Lustig

Honoring Auxiliary Police

Dear Editor,

The Nassau County Auxiliary Police Longevity Award Ceremony took place on Thursday, April 16. This was, thankfully, my fourth year having the honor of attending this important award ceremony.

People often refer to the Auxiliary Police as “toy cops.” They are the furthest from this label. These professional men and women, of all ages and walks of life, devote their valuable time in the performance of ancillary services to the Nassau County Police. With that service comes devotion, acumen, and genuine hard work. These public servants appear at vehicle accidents, natural disasters, and numerous other incidents where they are called upon, and serve with valor.

So, I hail each of them, with a special note of appreciation to Commanding Officer Deputy Inspector Daniel Gluck whom I’ve had the honor of witnessing as he rose through the ranks.

We, the People, should know that each officer must devote upwards of 40 weeks in order to prepare for entry into this wonderful and exciting force. So, when you happen to run into a friend who is also an officer in this Fourth Precinct, please, for all of us, salute that friend. Because they will surely be there for you.
