On February 28 (4 Adar), Rabbi Zalman and Mrs. Chanie Wolowik were met with their greatest tragedy and also their greatest challenge: they lost their nine-year-old son, Levi. Many wondered how they would be able to continue in their outreach work. Yet the Wolowiks knew from the beginning that this should only strengthen their commitment to bringing everyone closer to Torah and mitzvos.
No sooner was shivah over than the Wolowiks committed to having a new sefer Torah written in Levi's memory. What began with a small gathering at their house where each child had the opportunity to write a letter is continuing with a widespread campaign to learn and earn on behalf of Levi Yitzchak, a'h.
Traditionally, we seek to refine our character and learn Pirkei Avos, Ethics of the Fathers, as we count down to Shavuos. The Levi Learn-A-Thon brings children into the act with an exciting format, age-appropriate learning materials, and fun prizes. The Wolowiks hope that as many children (ages 5-15) will participate as possible-including those in local yeshivas, more remote yeshivas, and even those who do not attend yeshiva. The learning will be l'ilui nishmas Levi Yitzchak, Levi's soul will benefit from this mitzvah.
In this program, children will sign on to learn as much as possible: the 12 pesukim that Rebbe Menachem Mendel Shneerson, zt"l, prescribed for young children to learn, lines from Pirkei Avos, as well as a chapter of Tehillim that corresponds to the child's age-the more, the better! The more they learn, the greater the chance at earning one of the fantastic prizes, including an iPod Nano, a bicycle, an American Girl doll, and more. The grand prize is a $500 shopping spree at Z Berman books. Finally, children who participate also solicit sponsors from among friends and family to contribute financially towards the creation of the children's sefer Torah.
The raffle drawing will be held on June 17 but every participant will receive a prize at the completion ceremony. For more information, visit www.torah4levi.com or call 516-295-2478.
