North Shore defeats Flatbush. In the 2016 championship game of the seventh-grade boys’ division of the MJDSBL, North Shore defeated Flatbush by a final score of 48—37. The game was played in front of a cheering crowd in HAFTR. This was a rematch of a regular-season game played just three weeks earlier where North Shore won by three points. In the championship game, North Shore came out strong and raced out to a 12—0 lead and held a 14—4 advantage after one quarter. Flatbush was able to settle down and finished off an 8—0 run just before the half to close the gap to 22—15. North Shore’s height dominance took over in the third quarter and they built the lead to 19 points. But Flatbush would not go away and closed the gap to 11, which was the final score. North Shore was led by Hajibai with 18 points, Levian with 12, and Dicker with 8. Flatbush was led by Jacob Eliau with 17 points and Sammy Levy with 8 points.

Varsity Playoffs

Frisch over HAFTR. Andrew Langer scored 26 points and Ben Gerber and Josh Dukus each added 12 as the #10 Cougars (13—9) showed no rust from nearly a month off as they bounced the #9 Hawks (19—8) from the playoffs. Frisch never trailed, leading by as many as 17 in the first half before HAFTR got within eight at halftime. In the second half, the Hawks could get no closer than five. Frisch pulled away in the fourth. Perlow scored 26 points before getting hurt. The Cougars will face undefeated DRS in the semifinals.

Flatbush over Hillel. In what a was hard-fought and back-and-forth game, the Flatbush Falcons were able to prevail 56—53 over a strong, sharpshooting, and poised Hillel Heat basketball team. Hillel did a beautiful job at both ends of the floor, converting on 8 three-pointers and backing that up with a strong full-court-press defense. Hillel was led by Isaac Beda with 18 points, Gordon Adelson with 10, and Robert Tobias with 8 points. Flatbush pulled out the victory due in no small part to the great support it received from its fans. Flatbush was led in scoring by Abie Rosow with 16 points, Kevin Haddad with 12, and 9 points from Jackie Mishaan. The Falcons move on to the semifinals. Special recognition goes out to the fans of both Hillel and Flatbush for their amazing support, enthusiasm, and energy which contributed to an unbelievable atmosphere in Brooklyn on this night.

Heschel tops YDE. The Heschel Heat relied on its pressure defense early in the game, as they haven’t played in almost four weeks. They held the YDE Thunder to seven first-quarter points and only 16 at the half, opening a 16-point lead at the half, 32—16, and then coasted to a 68—41 quarterfinal victory. Every player but one scored for the Heat, which has been their M.O. all year long, with junior guard Jeremy Spiera leading the way with 14, followed by super sophomore Ilan Orgel’s 13 and senior captain Ben Brandeis with 11. Senior point guard Aaron Brandeis, though in foul trouble early, had 7 and 8 assists. Senior guard Morris Bassoul led YDE with 14, knocking down three 3s in the fourth quarter. The Heat now play Flatbush at home next week in a semifinal game.

JV Playoffs

DRS powers over Maor. In an unexpected matchup, Maor brought a lot of heart to Woodmere for a quarterfinal game. In the first half, it was a tightly contested game. Maor went up by 4 early in the first, but DRS answered quickly and would not look back. After the first three minutes of the game, DRS did not trail at all. Maor went into halftime down 10, but the second half was a great one for the Wildcats. Led by Gideon Velenski (25 points) and Eli Roz (20 points), the Wildcats blew this one open by a large margin and came out victorious. They faced the SAR Sting on March 8 in the semifinals.

MDY over TABC. With MDY securing home court for the first round of the playoffs they knew they would have their hands full with TABC, with an impressive 7 and 3 record. Both teams came out sluggish in the first half with MDY taking the lead 20—7. Both teams started to find their offense in the second half, but MDY’s defense in the second half secured the victory to move on to the second round. Leading scores for TABC: Yonatan Fine #00 with 10 points, Eli Harcsztark #2 with 9 points, and Avi Proctor #54 with 6 points.

Frisch over HANC. In a quarterfinal matchup vs. a tough and well coached HANC Hurricanes team, the Frisch Cougars overcame a 5-point deficit at the half and secured a gutty and hard-fought victory 55—47. The Cougars came out of the half trailing by 5 and went on an 8—0 run to start the second half. Twice HANC cut the lead to 1, and each time the Cougars answered with their own run. In the end, the victory was a tough one, but the Cougars will look to their next opponent and challenge, the MDY Warriors, in the upcoming JV semifinal game at Frisch.

Fun And Games At MTA

MTA Lion Kings Continue Undefeated

By Yosef Schatz. On Monday, several students from MTA filed onto the bus headed to DRS for the second chess match of the year. However, due to other events at MTA, some of MTA’s finest chess players were unable to attend the match. Captain Akiva Sherman quickly scrambled to collect enough students. At the tournament, MTA met and played against members of the JEC, TABC, DRS, and Shaarei Torah chess teams. Some games were fast-paced, ending in less than five minutes while others took longer. One game went on until there were just two and a half minutes remaining on the clock. In the end, MTA came out with a total score of 14/14 points, making it possible for MTA to clinch the playoff seat. The day proved successful once again for the MTA Lion Kings as they continue their season still undefeated.

MTA’s Soccer Season Kicks Off

By David Pando. This past week, the MTA Soccer Lions had their first game of the season, facing longtime rival and last year’s Yeshiva League champion, SAR. However the Lions were not intimidated by their foes, and “kicked off” the game by scoring in the first five seconds on a goal by Ariel Feuerstein with an assist by David Pando. After 15 minutes of intense soccer play, the first period ended with MTA trailing by a score of 5—2. The second period did not look promising after the first few minutes, and the Lions found themselves down. However, the team quickly recovered by switching up the defense and proceeded to hold off SAR from scoring for a solid ten minutes after halftime. Unfortunately, that did not last the entire period, and the SAR Sting managed to score four times, to pull away for the win. Despite their loss, the Lions are proud of their accomplishments–particularly keeping the game so close between them against one of the best teams in the league, and would like to give a shout-out to Ariel Feuerstein for 5 points, Shimmy Mandelbaum for 1, and to goalie Sam Weissman for his incredible performance.

Girls’ Varsity A

Frisch over Bruriah. This was a close game from beginning to end. Both teams played hard and made numerous threes and fast break layups. With 3:38 Frisch was down 3. With two minutes to go, Tamar Furer hit a three to put Frisch up by 2. Bruriah came down court and missed on an outside shot, with Furer getting the rebound. Furer proceeded to convert the second free throw to put Frisch up by one. She sealed the game with two more free throws with five seconds left on the clock. Furer finished with 24 points, with Julia Reichel adding 12. Jessie Orgel had 28 for Bruriah.

SKA tops Ilan. SKA took an early 9—1 lead but Ilan quickly came back; at the end of the first quarter SKA was up 13—9. Miriam Kazlowe scored 9 points in the first quarter. With a powerful team effort, SKA had a tremendous second quarter both defensively and offensively. SKA led at the half 23—11. SKA held on through the second half to beat Ilan with a final score of 38-22.
