The Bayswater Players are a group of mostly shomer Shabbos actors and actresses who feel the need to express their artistic talents, and the Bayswater Jewish Center in Far Rockaway is the venue that gives them the stage on which to do so.
People who have seen the shows know that the group usually does light comedies, like those written by Neil Simon. But it occurred to them that the shows always begin around November 9–10, which is the anniversary of Kristallnacht. So it was decided that this year’s show would be done in commemoration of this event in Jewish history, and the group chose The Diary of Anne Frank as a perfect vehicle to commemorate this event. Most children learn about Anne Frank as an introduction to the study of the Holocaust. Yet, many of their parents have never seen a stage production of this play. It is a way for families to experience a very moving and thought-provoking play—together, as a family. Hopefully, it will get parents, grandparents, and children to talk about their personal relationship to the Holocaust.
“I would suggest that most children nine years old and above would be able to understand what is happening. There is no violence or inappropriate language,” said Stuart Rappaport, O.D., speaking on behalf of the Bayswater Players.
Eleven performances have been scheduled: Thursday nights, November 8, 15, and 29 at 8:00 p.m.; Saturday nights, November 10, 17, and 24 and December 1 at 8:00 p.m.; and Sunday afternoons, November 11, 18, and 25 and December 2 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the box office, or in advance by calling 516-239-2632. ♦
