Rachel Bandler and Benjamin Parnes of HAFTR High School were named Siemens Competition semifinalists for science research projects that they conducted this past summer.
Rachel Bandler, a senior, carried out research this past summer together with her teammate, Kevin Crews of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, Aurora, Illinois as part of the Legacy Heritage Program at the Hebrew University in Israel. Their project, “A Comparison of Substrate Mimetic Inhibitors of PKB,” investigated the potential of creating a non-toxic drug that can selectively and effectively target cancer cells and kill them. Using the technique of solid phase peptide synthesis, Rachel and Kevin synthesized peptides that would inhibit the expression of Protein Kinase B, whose overactivation leads to cellular proliferation rather than apoptosis and eventually leads to cancer. Information about these protein interactions may pave the way to a multitude of new, medicinal peptides that are less toxic than current chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
Benjamin Parnes, a junior, was a Garcia Summer Scholar in the Department of Materials Science at SUNY Stony Brook, and was mentored under the direction of Professor Miriam Rafailovich and Daniel Katz. Benjamin’s project, produced together with teammates Darren Huang of Herricks High School and Wenting Cao of Mission San Jose High School, Fremont, California, is “Creating a Viable Source for Alternative Energy: Optimizing Methane Hydrate Formation, Stability, and Uptake via Natural Organic Matter.” The team investigated methane hydrates, a vast amount of potential energy trapped in seabed sediment that can be photocatalytically decomposed into methanol and hydrogen, which are significantly cleaner energy sources than crude oil. However, methane hydrates’ feasibility as a fuel source requires stabilizing its structure during the retrieval process, a process that is the topic of much investigation. Benjamin and his teammates used naturally occurring surfactants such as lipids, carbohydrates, and proteinaceous materials to stabilize the crystalline structure of the hydrates and optimize methane uptake for energy applications in an environmentally friendly and cost-effective manner. Their results can make new conventional fuel resources readily available.
May 2008 AP Scholars. HAFTR is pleased to recognize its students who have earned AP Scholar awards based on their outstanding academic performance on the May 2008 AP exams. About 18 percent of the 1.6 million students worldwide who took AP exams performed at a sufficiently high level to earn an AP Scholar award.
National AP Scholar award: Rafi Abrahams, Sam Carp, and Amy Kalowitz. These students received an average grade of at least a 4 on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more AP exams.
AP Scholar with Distinction award: Shaine Abbani, Rafi Abrahams, Michelle Abramowitz, Jaclyn Bernstein, Amanda Bienenfeld, Lawrence Brazin, Sam Carp, Shlomit Cymbalista, Daniella Davis, Matthew Goldfinger, Chloe Goldschmidt, Michael Haimson, Adam Hanau, Michael Heino, Kiki Isaacson, Amy Kalowitz, Sarah Kellner, Amy Kornblit, Brandon Menachem, Ian Miller, Alex Ramek, Samuel Rubin, Danielle Sacks, Jenna Salner, David Schwartz, Melanie Sedrish, Laura Shafran, Tamar Siskind, Steven Sosnick, Erica Stern, and Amanda Zaslowsky. These students earned an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more exams.
AP Scholar with Honor award: Eva David, Jaime Freilich, Mathew Gold, Jennifer Graber, Elana Gross, Elie Kaplan-Marans, Shoshana Lubin, Greg Rubinfeld, Yael Schein, Sandy Schlesinger, and Haley Zylberberg.
