 
Gedolei Yisrael Urge Shemiras Ha’lashon Effort As Protection For Eretz Yisrael

In response to the grave dangers besetting Eretz Yisrael, the gedolim have called upon K’lal Yisrael to exercise special care in the mitzvah of shemiras ha’lashon as a protection for all of those in harm’s way.
With Jewish boys facing the bombs and bullets of Hamas and families forced to run for cover as their homes are targeted by terrorist missiles, the need for a strong infusion of Divine mercy is urgent. The gedolim have made their pronouncement with the conviction that shemiras ha’lashon is a powerful vehicle for Hashem’s protection.
The Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation is heeding the call by organizing the first-ever machsom l’fi conducted on a worldwide scale. Shuls, schools, and individuals in Jewish communities all over the globe are being urged to participate in this program, which calls for a commitment of one hour a day in which one is especially careful to restrain oneself from speaking or listening to lashon ha’ra. Materials are being provided for schools and shuls so that they can quickly institute the program. Individual participants can e-mail or telephone the CCHF office for support materials.
Machsom l’fi has proven to be a tremendous z’chus for many families facing difficult challenges, and now, the entire family of K’lal Yisrael is being asked to participate in Eretz Yisrael’s great time of need. The Chofetz Chaim explains that shemiras ha’lashon brings Hashem’s protection for two reasons:
Firstly, it prevents the grave damage done by lashon ha’ra. When a person speaks lashon ha’ra, he is essentially setting into motion the Satan’s prosecution. At a time when the Jewish people desperately need their merits—not their deficiencies—to shine forth, lashon ha’ra is highly destructive.
Secondly, lashon ha’ra taints the mouth—the vehicle for Torah learning and tefillah, which are the Jewish people’s most powerful sources of merit. Even if a person prays with all his heart for the protection of Jews in Eretz Yisrael, his tefillah will be weakened and flawed if the mouth that speaks it has been tainted with lashon ha’ra. The same is true of Torah that is learned by one who speaks lashon ha’ra.
The machsom l’fi, while it demands focus on shemiras ha’lashon for only one limited period of time a day, creates a tremendous, concentrated source of merit. That is because in that one limited time period, a person is far more likely to succeed at actually keeping himself free of lashon ha’ra. It is a defined, manageable goal that puts success in reach. Many people have found that this taste of success enhances their shemiras ha’lashon throughout the day.
