A New York state trooper was stabbed in theÂ neck with a large kitchen knife today by a homeless man while in the stateÂ Capitol complex, officials said.
The officer, identified as Rodney Smith, wasÂ knifed once at the Empire State Plaza in Albany around 4:50 p.m.
The bloodshed took place in an undergroundÂ concourse that connects multiple buildings for the state Capitol.
It was not immediately clear why the attackerÂ wounded the police officer, whose name was reported byTheÂ Saratogian.
The suspect was still at-large as of earlyÂ this evening. He is believed to have taken the trooper’s radio during theÂ attack.
Police quickly closed off the plaza in hopesÂ of finding the suspect, the Albany Times Union said.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was not at theÂ Capitol at the time of the attack.
No description of the suspect was immediatelyÂ provided.
