A Palestinian and two Israelis were lightly injured in a violent confrontation near the West Bank settlement of Yitzhar on Monday.

The incident began when a Palestinian shepherd entered the grounds of the settlement and soldiers tried to escort him back out, Army Radio reported. The shepherd became agitated and he, along with a dozen other Palestinians, began throwing stones at the patrol.

Following standard military arrest procedures, one of the soldiers opened fire with riot dispersal weapons and hit one of the protesters in the leg. The man received medical assistance at the scene.

A soldier was also lightly injured in the incident and a member of the settlement’s security detail was hit in the head with a stone.

The strict orders governing the circumstances under which soldiers may open fire when facing stone-throwing protesters have come under criticism recently after a number of incidents in which soldiers were forced to retreat when attempting to disperse demonstrations.
