Sholam Weiss – Sentenced to 845 years for Victimless Nonviolent Wire Fraud Charges

Sources at the White House have made it known that over the next few hours President Trump will be issuing a number of pardons and commutations of sentences for possibly up to 100 people.

Amongst those who are expected to have their sentences commuted is former New York State Assembly Speaker, Sheldon Silver. The former Speaker was convicted twice on corruption charges and sentenced to six years in prison.  Mr. Silver was out on appeal for several years following his conviction but had to report to prison less than a year ago.

Another expected commutation expected to be handed down is that of Sholom Weiss.  Mr. Weiss was sentenced to 800 years in prison in 2000 for racketeering , wire fraud and money laundering related to an immense fraud scheme that siphoned $450 million  from an insurance company. He spent a year on the run in Europe and Soujt America before being arrested in Austria.

Both Silver and Weiss have been serving their sentences at the state prison in Otisville, New York.  Pardons, commutations and clemency are presidential prerogatives usually exercised at the end of a presidential term.
