ISSUES OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OF POLAND; LAUNCHES WEBSITE ON POLAND RESTITUTION
We wanted to update you on the latest developments regarding Poland.
The World Jewish Restitution Organization (WJRO), representing major national and international Jewish organizations, has stepped up its efforts to secure private property restitution legislation in Poland and in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
The current Polish government remains unwilling to move forward with legislation for the restitution of private property seized during the Holocaust and/or subsequently nationalized by the Communist government — despite the fact that other countries in the region have enacted some form of legislation.
An Open Letter to the President of Poland from the WJRO and survivor groups in Israel was published in the Jerusalem Post in advance of the President’s visit to Israel last week.
The Open Letter received significant coverage in the media. Articles reporting on the Open Letter were published by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency and in the Polish media (click here and here and see below).
WJRO is working closely with the United States and other governments as we pursue the issue.
In addition, WJRO has launched a website — www.polishrestitution.org — with detailed information about the importance of restitution of private property in Poland. WJRO will post updates and other information regarding restitution in Poland on this website. You can sign up here to receive specific updates on new developments.
