Young Israel Supports Kotel Status Quo

The National Council of Young Israel (NCYI) issued the following statement regarding the status of the Kotel (Western Wall):

“The National Council of Young Israel applauds Culture and Sports Minister Miri Regev for her bold stand in supporting the fifty-one-year status quo at the Kotel, ensuring that the holy site remains unadulterated and united for all.

“We agree with Minister Regev’s statement that when the reform movement is visiting in Israel ‘they should behave’ and adhere to the local customs and social structures that have been the status quo for over five decades. We also wish to commend Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked for standing tall with the Religious Zionist community, and as a result stepping down as the principal of the Western Wall Appropriation Committee.

“During this trying period, known as the Three Weeks of Mourning, we call on Prime Minister Netanyahu to stand strong and to continue his good work on behalf of the State of Israel, while safeguarding the Kotel as the one place where all Jews can be united.”

For the past 106 years, the National Council of Young Israel has ably served the broader Jewish community. With more than 25,000 member families and approximately 135 branch synagogues throughout the United States, Canada, and Israel, the National Council of Young Israel is a multifaceted organization that embraces Jewish communal needs and often takes a leading role in tackling the important issues that face the Jewish community in North America and Israel.
